Prime Minister’s visit to Bhutan (May 16-17, 2008)

Prime Minister will visit Bhutan from May 16-17, 2008 at the invitation of the Royal Government of Bhutan.

India and Bhutan share uniquely warm and cordial relations. These relations are characterized by close consultations, maturity, complete trust and mutual understanding. Prime Ministers visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular visits and exchange of views at the highest levels between the two countries.

During his visit, Prime Minister will receive audiences with Their Majesties, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan and Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. He will hold discussions with Prime Minister Lyonchen Jigme Y. Thinley on issues of mutual interest, including Indias development cooperation with Bhutan. While in Bhutan, the Prime Minister will address a joint session of the first elected Parliament of Bhutan. The Prime Minister would also dedicate the 1020 Mw Tala hydroelectric project, built with Government of India assistance and lay the foundation of the 1095 Mw Punatsangchhu hydroelectric project.
