Cultural Exchange in the Dragon Kingdom

The Nehru-Wangchuck Cultural Centre (NWCC) was inaugurated as a part of the Cultural Wing of the Embassy of India, in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Government of India (GOI).

The Centre was inaugurated by Dr. Karan Singh, the President of the ICCR, GOI and Lyonpo Minjur Dorji, Home and Cultural Affairs Minister, Royal Government of Bhutan (RGOB) on 21st Sept, 2010.

The Nehru-Wangchuck Cultural Centre (NWCC) is currently abuzz with the following activities:
Yoga Classes
The Centre has commenced regular classes of yoga (one session is of about 40 minutes) from 7AM to 11AM in the morning and resumes from 4PM to 7PM in the evening from Monday to Friday. The classes are open to all without any charges. The classes are being conducted by a professional trained teacher, brought on deputation from Government of India.

Library and a reading room
The library of the NWCC has well stocked collections of over 5000 books, covering a wide spectrum of subjects such as religion, art and culture, history, political affairs, fashion and fiction. The library has also a reading room with latest magazines and newspapers.

Music Classes
NWCC has a professional teacher from India to conduct the classical music classes on Indian classical musical instruments like Tabla, Harmonium, Sitar and Dholak. The classes are conducted from 9.30 am to 6.30pm from Monday to Friday.

Exhibition Gallery
The Centre has 16,000sq feet area for display. Many important Exhibitions took place in the centre such as s Photographic Exhibition entitled “Buddhism in India” by an internationally renowned Indian based Photographer Shri Sondeep Shankar, an exhibition entitled, “Through the lens of Time-Glimpses of the unseen images of Bhutanese Monarchs: by Royal Office for Media and His Majesties Secretariat, Painting Exhibition by Children’s of Bhutan”. Painting Exhibition such as “Painting the Future of Friendship”, “DOCU-Bhutan-An artistic Awakening”, Bhutan through the Lens of the King” and Giving Warmth” and many more.
Multi-purpose Hall
The Centre has a Multi-purpose hall equipped with state–of-art acoustics, which can be utilized for regular programmes and activities both from India and Bhutan. The multipurpose hall has a stage for performance like dance, music and bands and other cultural programs. The hall is also available for conducting seminars, conferences, talks, book launches and any other suitable activity.
Reaching out to the people of Bhutan:
The Centre proposes to reach out to the people of Bhutan, to schools, colleges and universities. In addition, the Centre proposes to collaborate with various cultural bodies in Bhutan.

The Centre also organizes seminars, guest lectures, book launch, various therapies, scholarship for studies in Indian art and culture, cross cultural exchange of art and artists. Documentaries made for Public Diplomacy Division, MEA were screened every Friday.
