The Ambassador’s scholarship was initiated in 2001. Every year this Mission receives more than 1000 application forms directly from interested students. The Scholarship is awarded to meritorious and deserving Bhutanese students who are already undergoing undergraduate level courses in various recognized institutes in India after completing their schooling in Bhutan on self-financing basis. In the last five years, w.e.f. 2011 till 2015 more than 3748 Bhutanese students have benefitted from this scheme.

During the visit of President of India to Bhutan in November, 2014, the Ambassador’s scholarship amount was increased to Rs. 2 crores. It was decided to earmark Rs. 1 crore for providing Vocational training to un-employed Bhutanese youth and thus the Vocational Training was conceptualized in 2015-16 under Ambassador’s Scholarship Scheme. The main objective of imparting Vocational training to Bhutanese youth under the Ambassador’s Scholarship scheme is to improve skill development and make the youth competitive in the job market. It is also intended to provide livelihood opportunities to the un-employed youth of Bhutan and school dropouts unable to pursue further studies due to financial constraints or other reasons. In 2015-16, a total of 33 Bhutanese youth availed of this scheme. They undertook the following two trainings:
     (a) Diploma in Construction Management - 9 students
     (b) Certificate course in Electrical/Plumbing - 24 students

All expenses, including tuition fees, travel cost, hostel accommodation and food charge, are covered under the Ambassador’s scholarship for vocational training. In addition, living expenses/stipend is also paid in cash.

Interested students can apply directly to the Embassy for both these scholarship schemes in the prescribed application form which can be downloaded from the Embassy’s website. Prior to submission of forms for the self-financing scheme, the forms have to be counter-signed by the Head of the College/Institute where the applicants are studying in India.
