Remarks by Ambassador at the International Day of Yoga 2026
(Changlimithang Stadium, Thimphu; 21 June 2026)
My heartiest congratulations to all on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga. We are honoured by the presence of His Excellency and friends of Yoga in such large numbers braving the rains in these historic grounds in Thimphu. This impressive gathering today represents Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi’s description of Yoga as a “Global movement for health, harmony and human connection”.
Close to 12 years ago, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June to be the International Day of Yoga. The UN recognized Yoga as a holistic approach to health and well-being and that wider dissemination of information about the benefits of practicing Yoga would be beneficial for the health of the world population. I appreciate your kind response to the United Nations’ call.
The word Yoga in ancient Indian language means union symbolizing harmony between body, mind and spirit as well as our deeper connection with nature. Sometimes, Yoga is perceived as a combination of well-conceptualized physical postures but what is equally important component of Yoga is a set of breathing exercises and techniques of meditation. All these together provide real depth to Yoga and its benefits for physical vitality, mental resilience, inner balance towards a healthier and more fulfilling life.
The theme for the 12th International Day of Yoga this year is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”. This holds special message of Yoga’s significance for healthy and dignified ageing as people aspire to live a longer, more active and more fulfilling lives. In the context of increasing lifestyle-related ailments, this theme underlines the importance of Yoga for preventive healthcare and holistic well-being.
I appreciate the close cooperation between Embassy of India, Thimphu and the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development, Ministry of Home Affairs in organizing this Yoga Day function in the spirit of the special and unique relations between India and Bhutan. I thank all the participants and organizers today for their interest and contribution for this noble cause of Yoga. The presence of all of you symbolizes our common belief in the role of Yoga as a force for well-being, social harmony and collective resilience. I wish that Yoga could become a permanent feature of your lives towards healthy, fulfilling and soulful living.
Thank you, Tashi Delek
