Press Release: ICCR’s global video blogging contest in the margins of Gandhi@150 Special

Webinar on the theme “Weaving Relations: Textile Traditions”

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the cultural arm of the Ministry of External Affairs had organized a special Webinar on the theme of “Weaving Relations: Textile Traditions” on 3 October 2020 as part of the Grand Finale of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi. The Webinar served as a unique platform to facilitate knowledge-sharing of the unique textile traditions from different countries including the history and heritage of textiles as well the specialty of weaving techniques and best practices.

We were privileged and honoured to have the participation of the Royal Queen Mother Her Majesty Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck as the Guest of Honour through a recorded video message in the inaugural session of the Textiles Webinar, which was virtually attended by the Prime Minister of India as well. Her Majesty had highlighted the importance of Textiles as an engine of growth of the Bhutanese economy and shed light on her role as the patron for preservation and promotion of the traditional textiles of Bhutan.

On the sidelines of the Textiles Webinar, ICCR had launched a video blogging competition from 15 September 2020 till 2 October 2020 to commemorate the Gandhi@150 birth anniversary celebrations. Foreign nationals from across the globe were invite to upload 3-minute videos showcasing the unique textile traditions of their countries.

We are pleased to share that Ms. Karma Choden, Manager, Cluster & Craft Bazaar Development Division of the Agency for Promotion of Indigenous Crafts has won the first prize of US$500 for her entry in ICCR’s global video blogging competition. Her entry was judged to be the best against several entries submitted by contestants from 21 other countries. The prize was handed over to Ms. Karma Choden by the Ambassador of India to Bhutan in a special function organized on 7 December 2020 at the India House Estate.
