Remarks by Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj on the occasion of Ayurveda Day 2020.

Mr Dorjee Tshering;

Ms Yeshey Lhaden:

Prof. Pawan Kumar Godatwar;

All my friends from Bhutan and India

Kuzuzangpo La! Namaskar!

Greetings on Ayurveda Day

I am delighted that today, together with Bhutan, we are hosting a special Webinar on Ayurveda Day 2020, which also coincides with ’Dhanvantari Jayanti’ - the birthday of Lord Dhanvantari who is regarded as the physician of the Gods.

Ayurveda literally means the knowledge of life which originated in India more than 3000 years ago. An Ayurveda lifestyle is based on the circadian rhythm and is in harmony with surrounding nature. And it is evidence based! Ayurveda is also beyond geographical, cultural and religious boundaries. It is the green way of life.

According to Ayurveda, disease is due to imbalances among the body, mind, consciousness and the environment. Ayurvedic treatment, therefore, aims at nullifying or minimizing the causes of the imbalance through lifestyle interventions and natural therapies.

In order to stimulate wider global understanding and acceptance in this ancient discipline, Ayurveda practitioners have re-validated its ancient principles and their contemporary applications by conducting research, per globally accepted methods and parameters. Every year almost 5000 research studies are conducted which are duly registered at the Clinical Trials Registry, a Government of India initiative. The outcomes of these studies are published as high impact research papers in peer reviewed international scientific journals. The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India has also configured a web-based AYUSH research portal at http://ayushportal.nic.in on which more than 20,000 research abstracts have been uploaded as material for ready reference by scientists and researchers in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine.

Standardization and testing of traditional medicines has been implemented by the Government of India through the Pharmacopoeia Commission of Indian medicine & Homeopathy set up by the Ministry of AYUSH. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia Committee of this Commission prescribes standards of single drugs and compound formulations for manufacturers of Ayurvedic medicines. You would be pleased to know that quality standards of 645 single drugs and 202 Ayurvedic formulations have been laid down in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.

I will also add that Ayurveda is listed as one of the globally popular systems of traditional medicine in the World Health Organization’s World Traditional Medicine Strategy, 2014-2023.

I am also pleased to share that the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India has signed a Project Collaboration Agreement with WHO, Geneva to take forward cooperation on promoting the quality, safety and effectiveness of traditional medicines including those used in Ayurveda-based treatment.

International collaboration in the area of Ayurveda and AYUSH systems is, however, not limited to the WHO. This year’s theme of Ayurveda Day is ‘Ayurveda for COVID-19’. In response to the outreach by the Ministry of AYUSH for initiating research on COVID-19 through AYUSH systems, the National Centre for Natural Products Research, University of Mississippi, the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston; the European Academy of Ayurveda, Birstein, Germany and the Frankfurt Innovations Biotechnologies Center, Germany have expressed their willingness to undertake collaborative research on COVID-19.

Against this indeed impressive backdrop, I am very pleased that today we have three prominent speakers from Bhutan and India who have core knowledge of Ayurveda. I would request them to take over now!

Thank you! Tashi Delek!
